“I crave the taste of blood” Interview: Jetplane Landing
From BBC Air, by BBC Webteam on 1 July 2002
Every week we'll be interrogating one of our favourite musos to get to the bottom of their tireless creativity. This week it's Andrew, from Jetplane Landing. |
What's your name and where d'you come from?
Andrew, from Jetplane Landing. Two of us are from Derry and the other two Jamie and Raife are from London. |
Where did your band get its name?
Someone heard us rehearse and said ‘Jesus lads you boys sound like a jet plane landing’. If we’re anything we’re loud. That and a story about At The Drive-In. |
If one of the band left, who would you get to replace them?
Raife would have to move over for Mr Grohl on drums, Jamie could be replaced by Geddy Lee and Cahir by Bruce Lee. |
If you could remove somebody's celebrity status who would it be and why?
'H' from Steps - send him back to wherever he came from. |
Who inspires you?
The best thing about being in Jetplane Landing is meeting the people we meet after shows and on tour. Our fans are the best. |
If you could cover any record, what would it be?
'Thunderstruck' by AC/DC – it doesn’t get any better than that. |
What was your first public performance?
Jetplane Landing is a strange band in that, we recorded ‘Zero for Conduct’ before we ever played a show. The first night was in Auntie Annies’s Belfast supporting Czech band Sunshine. My nerves were awful, I forgot the first line of the first song – I remember thinking ‘this is going to be interesting!’ |
What was the first record you bought?
‘Mary’ by The Four of Us. They were big in Ireland. Closely followed by Kick by INXS. Sorry. |
And what's on your stereo just now?
Badmotorfinger – Soundgarden. I like that Sugababes song on the radio. That’s good. |
What's your mobile ringtone?
Ascending - Ring. - ZZZZ. |
What's the last gig you went to?
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at the Brixton Academy – I crave the taste of blood. |
What's your favourite venue?
I like the Astoria in London – cos it was the first big show we ever did. I remember standing backstage thinking – 'that’s a lot of people, don’t mess up'. |
What's in your rider?
We get what we’re given – the best thing to get is an assortment of penny sweets. I like the white mice and flying saucers. |
Why should we buy your album?
I couldn’t possibly say…. |
What are you doing tonight?
Watching the final of Stars in Their Eyes – I reckon I could do Fergal Sharkey or Peter Cunnah from D:ream. |
Which question do you wish you were asked in interviews?
Does my bum look big in this? |
Go on then, answer it!
No. You look fine. |
