“Pop. Rock 'n' roll. Emo. All rolled into one great big ball of FUN.” Single Review: The Young Playthings - Shes A Rebel

From Kissing Just For Practise, by Mike Hope on 12 February 2006

Smalltown America have really got their hands on some magic with The Young Playthings. Pop. Rock 'n' roll. Emo. All rolled into one great big ball of FUN. Three little letters that are often forgotten in the modern music world. It's all about the musical party when it comes to The Young Playthings, something which is highlighted, underlined and surrounded by stars in main track "She's A Rebel". It's an infectious, accessable rock 'n' roll tale of love for the rebellious girls, and it'll have you singing it in the most inappropriate places for weeks on end. Next up is "Stretch Your Arms Out To The Dutch", a brilliantly fun, hilarious and bonkers song that probably should be a lighter-waving anthem if it wasn't for the brilliantly daft lyrical content. Finally, "You're The One" is more classic summery rock 'n' roll happiness. It's a simple and effective singalong that's bound to have you dancing in your room. This release comes in six (yes, I said six) sleeves featuring different women through history who have been considered "rebels" in some form or other, in each there's a set of photographs that make up an mini-poster and it's rather lovingly bound together. An exciting new band that are packed with fun and humour, if you're partial to either of those you should get your hands on this release!
