Awesome January News Splurge
Free music this weekend in London! We've teamed up with London promoters On Fire and the stalwarts at
RoTa to stage the first in a semi-regular series of free live shows and at the same time have a party to celebrate the launch of Public Service Broadcast Nine.
Live music comes from London's wonderful, heartwarming/breaking indie pop kids Pocketbooks, laptop wizkid and new addition to the STA family Alan MX, and - in a true showing of DIY grit and determination, Q Without U, who are coming all the way from Glasgow to play for us.
As well as this, Jamie Summers - writer of the rather great mp3 blog The Runout Groove - will be spinning a few of his favourite tunes from the DJ booth.
It all happens on Saturday 12th January at the Notting Hill Arts Club. Doors are at 4pm, music starts sometime around 5pm - and it's all over by 8pm, giving you the rest of Saturday night free. Nearest tube station is Notting Hill Gate. Although the club is largely unmarked, it's next to a hairdressers and is pretty easy to spot. Check out the RoTa website for more details.
FIGHTING WITH WIRE - LISTEN NOW!
Thanks to everyone who came out to see Fighting With Wire on their UK tour last month! The band had
so much fun, they're planning to come back over in May for some more dates. Their debut album Man Vs Monster is out in shops in March, but don't forget you can buy it now from the STA online store for just £8 + P&P! Thanks to everyone who has done so already. For those who aren't yet convinced they need this album in their lives, you can now listen to the entire album for free via the monkey jukebox on the site. So what are you waiting for?
CLUB PLAYTHINGS & THE HOT SEX! EP
DIY to the core, The Young Playthings have only gone and set up their own clubnight! The first one goes
down next month, on February 10th at the Port Mahon in Oxford. Already confirmed are the band themselves, who will undoubtably be spinning through some of the hot new material they've been working on to keep warm this winter, as well as London powerpoprockers Winners. More is sure to come, so keep an eye on the STA newspage and the band's myspace!
This all ties in nicely with the release of their new EP, the saucily-titled Hot Sex! EP. Featuring two tracks from last year's acclaimed debut Who Invented Love? as well as two brand new tracks, this hits all good digital retailers on February 14th. Just in time for Valentines day - awwwwww, those guys!
There's also a fantastic new video for the title track. See what happens when Tibor arrives for his first day at the office and realises that he's in for much more than the usual watercooler gossip and office politics; this is an office run by the unscrupulous Bateman and his sleazy assistant Jors Truly after all! You can watch the entire STA Videography now on our website.
NEW TO THE STORE!
The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed some new, non-STA additions to the store. We're now stocking releases from some of our favourite DIY bands and bedroom labels, and to kickstart it we've added the following:
Counterpoint DVD Zine #1
Issue 1 of a brand new DVD fanzine! Contains interviews / live performances / videos from . Also comes
with 4 original postcards and a comic strip. This items comes HIGHLY recommended from all at STA.
Fighting With Wire - Machine Parts CDS
You've been buying up their debut album in such numbers that we thought we'd source some copies of this as well. Features two tracks not present on the aforementioned debut album, as well as an enhanced video for the title track.
Pocketbooks - Across The Line 7" (Atomic Beat Records, ltd to 400 copies)
As seen on Public Service Broadcast 9. Seven inches of sweet-as-lemon-pie indie pop, with a b-side that name checks the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Plus, if you buy it, you get free mp3 downloads of the tracks!
Pocus Whiteface - But It's Home 7"/CDR (Label Whiteface, ltd to 200 copies)
Two tracks of angular noisy rock ACTION. Think Shellac, Mclusky, Nirvana-when-they-weren't-pop. Plus, comes with a free bonus CDR that contains both tracks as well as an enhanced section featuring MP3s of a previously-released 6 track EP! A brand new, exclusive Pocus Whiteface track is set for release on Public Service Broadcast 10, which is slated for release early this summer.
Projections - We Couldn't Speak 7" (Studio Penguin, ltd to 400 copies)
As seen on Public Service Broadcast 8. Two tracks of scuzzy, semi-fi postpunk - a total attack on your senses. Projections feature the vocal talents of one Steve Ansell, better know these days for fronting hyperactive disco-punk machine Blood Red Shoes. Damn these talented kids.
Q Without U - Slow Clap 7" (Pet Pirhana Records, ltd to 200 copies)
Q Without U - One Piece Puzzle CDS (Hot!Guts!Records!)
As seen on Public Service Broadcast 9. Two DIY singles from the Scottish DIY mentalist noiseniks. The 7" sleeves are hand-designed, and the CD single comes in a funky retro-design sleeve that makes Daniel think of his old Commodore 64.
As well as this, we've also come across a number of copies of Jetplane Landing's I Opt Out 7", they were down the back of Mr Burchell's sofa. Get them while they're there!
NEW STA LABEL BLOG
And finally... have you ever wondered what goes on behind-the-scenes at STA? Or at least what we'd write about given unfettered access to the internet? Wonder no more, as we're stepping into the Space Year 2008 with our very own label blog. Already on there: some half-blurred memories of our 'Jingle All The Dayer' shindig in Leeds; an account of 2007 that is ENTIRELY TRUE and some kind of stupid cat picture.
STA ON TOUR
Aside from the first Public Service Broadcast Club, it's a pretty quiet month. Fighting With Wire, however, follow up their UK tour with a few headlining Irish shows.
