Conceived as a university engineering project, ILLNESS is Spencer and Emilio, a pair of Brighton youngsters attempting to tame electric guitar and acoustic drumkit like there were no tomorrow.
Synthesizing pop hooks and abrasive audio assaults, Illness are smashing their way through legions of musical mediocrity in the 'dying twilight of the late capitalist age'.
This is their debut EP, 'Gifts From God' – recorded by Rory Bratwell (Kasms, Test Icicles) - six tracks long and an unrelenting argument against the need for vocals. Opener, 'Old Song', hooks the listener from the first shred of guitar and snare crack, it's a two minute wonder of indie-pop minimalism. No time or space is wasted as our duo pummel through riff after riff, propelled by energetic, boy-wonder drum lines 'Gutmilk''s final change is so uplifting and soulful; the climax of 'Dave Escapes', full of power and wild emotion as the drums thrash around the workings of the guitar parts in blissful wedlock; the epic riff of closing track, 'Hail! Kitty!', finally unleashed in a frenzied fit of ecstasy and rage.
Rhythm and melody. Rhythm and melody. These two words are the one unifying constant on an record that refuses to rehash the same ideas over and over, making the use of two instruments exciting and unique with every new second.
The only vocal chords ILLNESS have use for are your own - let's buddy up shouting in the front row.
