Rock Sound Magazine Review Calories Live In Southampton

'Unflappable and unflustered by techincal issues, they fill out the potentially awkward interludes with some good banter, largely centered on Tom talking utter shit into his microphone' - 7/10

On a packed bill, in a packed room and with no soundcheck, Birmingham trio Calories aren't enjoying the easiest of evenings. They're still mighty impressive though. In a stop-start-stop-start set featuring only a brief cluster of songs, proceedings are interrupted by drummer Tom readjusting his kit, and singer John's guitar dying during the intro of the final song, prompting co-vocalist Pete to announce: "That might be it then". Thankfully, the boys battle on, overcome the amplification gremlins, and complete a well-received set of fine, instantaneously appealing indie-rock tunes. Unflappable and unflustered by techincal issues, they fill out the potentially awkward interludes with some good banter, largely centered on Tom talking utter shit into his microphone ("I like Southampton, it's dead clean and stuff") and deciding mid-set to change the band's name to Pre-order The Album. It's certainly not seamless, but Rock Sound's definitely not the only punter left wishing the could play for longer.
