Reviewers For Shout4Music In Attendance At More Than Conquerors Latest Visit To Glasgow
This show just felt truncated, amputated, like an anti-climactic disappointment. However, whilst that opening statement I just conjectured may leave you thinking this will be a negative review... it won't be. It will likely be as short though, like some incredibly intelligent metaphor... but it won’t be that either.
Perhaps it was my own high hopes following the release of their impeccable debut album; the fact the crowd just wasn't that packed out or absorbed in the performance; or even the jarred atmosphere following the explicit set of main support Mechanical Smile; or more likely because the band's set was painfully short. Whatever it was the show didn't reach the lofty heights of my ambitions, but it was still fantastic.
Opening with the crunch of recent single 'Pits Of Old' (complete with entertaining guitar malfunction) the Belfast-based quartet started off their short but convincing set. Featuring album highlights ‘Hearth & Home’ and ‘Jaw’ as well as old favourites such as ‘Go On Go On Get Out’ the band played for approximately forty minutes and nine songs. Including the standard fake encore scenario, playfully introduced by the impressively bearded Kris Platt's quip "Wanna know something you already know?" before delving into a strong rendition of "Go On Go On...".
Despite some overly bright lighting during the opening tracks which distorted the feel of the music, the crowd and the show amounted to an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately matched up to my idealised view it wasn't quite perfect, but that isn't really a fair judgement. Whilst their sound could easily be palmed off as "old Biffy" around Glasgow, More Than Conquerors really seem to have made it their second home and become an honorary member of the local scene. Then again, with music like this, who wouldn't welcome them with open arms?
