Little Bear Joins Shane Filan At Music City Launch 2014
When and where? January 17, from 7.30pm at the Peace Garden / Foyle Street Car Park.
Hosted by Edith Bowman (from BBC Radio 1), ‘Hear the City Sing’ a free public event will combine outdoor music with the spectacular visual Global Rainbow art installation, representing the success of Derry-Londonderry City of Culture 2013 whilst offering a preview of what is in store for Music City 2014.
Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly said he is delighted with the announcement that Shane Filan has been confirmed to perform, encouraging all to attend he said this exciting event is the city’s way of thanking all who participated in the monumental success of last year.
‘This announcement is just one of a number of significant announcements for the city as part of our legacy promise for our year as 2014 City of Music. ‘Hear the City Sing’ provides the perfect combination of local talent with that of an internationally recognised performer, combining music and visual art at an inspiring event which will reach out to a wide ranging audience within and outside the city. Aptly timed to bridge the gap between last year and the beginning of the brand new year ahead.’
‘A symbolic representation of new beginnings, creative inspiration and hope for the city will be translated by the crescendo at the end of the event, when at approximately 9.00pm Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow will be illuminated, beaming a spectrum of lazer coloured lights across the banks of the Foyle for five nights, creating a natural perspective arc of a rainbow symbolically connecting people, areas and time. This will be an emotive and engaging experience.’
Oonagh McGillion, Director of Legacy at Derry City Council said.
‘We have had an exceptional year not only for musical performances but also for educational and community engagement projects, and now we must put into practice our Music Legacy plan. We have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to make the most of 2013 and Hear the City Sing provides the opportune event to be enjoyed by all generations.’
In addition live music performances will be offered in a number of local cafes, restaurants, hotels, bars and retail outlets from 7pm-8pm as part of a new initiative to create a Friday evening music Culture in our City Centre.
