AU Magazine Review ASIWYFA's Self-Titled Debut

'Gives off an air of celebration and fist-in-the-air defiance... they've captured the nuclear intensity of their live show' - 8/10

Never accuse ASIWYFA of selling themselves short. Ever since they burst onto the live scene, they have demanded attention, and this geologically massive debut album will certainly afford them that. As much as it will be seen as an attempt to bottle the band’s astonishing live energy, however, it also requires comparison to the band’s previous recorded material, especially the self-released mini-album 'This Is Our Machine And Nothing Can Stop It'.

That record was an astoundingly accomplished manifesto for the band, and here they have re-recorded three songs from it, as well as "These Riots Are Just The Beginning", the lead track from the 'Tonight The City Burns' EP, and "A Little Bit Of Solidarity Goes A Long Way", which first appeared on the Oh Yeah Sessions ’08 compilation. The re-recordings are uniformly superior while, for the most part, the new material builds on what the band have already achieved, as this record sounds positively enormous, while it’s also much more varied in tone. Where This Is Our Machine… was a moody, tumultuous beast, songs like "Start A Band" and especially "Don’t Waste Time Doing Things You Hate" give off an air of celebration and fist-in-the-air defiance. In that sense, they’ve captured the nuclear intensity of their live show and you sense that their aim is nothing less than to soundtrack lives. It’s not flawless and it’s probably over-long, but as a debut album it leaves the mind boggled as to where ASIWYFA will take us next. Chris Jones
