Letters EP 8/10

"...A four-track journey of post-metal riffs and soaring, epic song-writing."

Since the release of their stunning debut album in 2009, And So I Watch You From Afar have been busy, busy bees. Numerous tours and festival appearances, including their most recent tour as main support for Oceansize, have seen them steadily grown their fan-base, and with lots of new faces joining the ASIWYFA ship, something new was needed to sate their appetites. Thus here is the Letters EP, a four-track journey of post-metal riffs and soaring, epic song-writing. Eschewing the usual instrumental band trend of writing ten minute songs, ASIWYFA have carefully crafted each track on this EP, fitting as many ideas as possible into each song but without sounding overly messy. First track and recent live addition "S Is For Salamander", starts off frantic and heavy but then morphs into melody-filled post-hardcore with pounding bass bleeding through the speakers. "B Is For B Side" continues with more ground-shaking breakdowns and some steamrolling drums courtesy of Chris Wee. There are no dead tracks on this EP, each one as inventive and interesting as the last and never losing grip of the listeners attention. ASIWYFA could be the first instrumental rock band in recent memory with the potential for much greater things. Keep an eye on this lot. 8/10
